The Moontower Christmas Tree
If you've read about the moontower on this site or many other places on the internet, you know that moontowers are unique to Austin. The city bought them from Detroit in 1894 and 13 still survive today as historical pieces.
There is one moontower in Austin located in Zilker Park. Zilker Park isn't much anything like the way the "beer bust" woods are portrayed in the film (at least IMO), and indeed Austin is a much bigger city than the unnamed town in the movie. You may also know that the moontower in the movie was not a real Austin moontower, but was fabricated for the film and was much, much shorter than a real moontower for filming purposes. I believe the 25th Anniversary celebration of Dazed also featured a screening at Zilker Park next to this very moontower.
Another cool thing I just learned about the real moontower in Zilker Park is that they turn it into a giant Christmas tree every year. It looks really cool and here are a few videos showing it off:
